First time in Morocco?
We're obviously biased, but we genuinely believe Morocco is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, filled with incredible landscapes, rich culture, amazing food, and some of the warmest, most welcoming people you'll ever meet!
To help make your trip as smooth as possible, we've put together a few tips and practical things to know before you arrive.
Don't worry too much, Moroccans are known for their hospitality, and if you ever get lost, confused, or need help, chances are someone will happily point you in the right direction.
SHOULD I BRING CASH?
Yes. Cards are accepted in many places, but cash is still king in Morocco, especially for taxis, souks, smaller cafés, and spontaneous shopping decisions.
There are plenty of ATMs throughout Marrakech.
SHOULD I GET A LOCAL SIM CARD?
We highly recommend it. You can easily buy a SIM card at Marrakech Airport upon arrival, or download an eSIM before your trip through apps like Nomad or Saily (best option).
Your future self (and Google Maps) will thank you.
WHAT LANGUAGE DO PEOPLE SPEAK?
Arabic and French are the main languages spoken in Morocco. English is also widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas, so you'll be absolutely fine!
And if all else fails, smiling and pointing usually works.
IS MOROCCO A MUSLIM COUNTRY?
Morocco is a Muslim country, and we're very proud of our traditions and culture. At the same time, Morocco is known for being welcoming, open-minded, and accustomed to visitors from all over the world.
HOW SHOULD I DRESS?
Marrakech is generally relaxed, especially in hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas. That said, we recommend avoiding overly revealing clothing when exploring the city out of respect for local customs.
Think comfortable, respectful, and weather-appropriate.
CAN I DRINK ALCOHOL IN MOROCCO?
Yes. Alcohol is served in many hotels, restaurants, beach clubs, and bars throughout Marrakech. Just keep in mind that public intoxication is not part of the local culture and is generally frowned upon.
CAN I DRINK THE TAP WATER?
We recommend sticking to bottled or filtered water during your stay. Better safe than sorry.
IS IT A SAFE COUNTRY?
Yes! Like any major city, common sense goes a long way.
Keep an eye on your belongings, be aware of your surroundings, and politely ignore anyone trying a little too hard to be your tour guide!
CAN I NEGOTIATE PRICES?
Absolutely. Negotiating is part of the culture, especially in the souks. Don't be shy, it's expected, and often half the fun.
WHAT ABOUT MARRAKECH?
Marrakech is a world of its own, vibrant, colorful, lively, and wonderfully chaotic. No other city in Morocco quite feels the same, and that's part of its charm.
Moroccans are incredibly warm and hospitable. We love talking to people, helping visitors, sharing food, and making everyone feel at home. That being said, Marrakech is also one of the most visited cities in the world, and sometimes the combination of Moroccan hospitality and a little bit of Marrakech energy can feel... intense.
Street vendors, restaurant hosts, and shopkeepers might enthusiastically invite you in, and if it ever becomes a bit much, don't hesitate to politely say "La, choukran" ("No, thank you") and keep walking.
ANY FINAL ADVICE?
Slow down! Have mint tea. Get lost in the medina. Take the longer route. Accept that not everything will go according to plan. Morocco tends to reward people who embrace the unexpected ❤️
